Starting with summer 2026, I am uploading mpeg audio files of some of the songs that musicians have performed at the Rendezvous in the Prairie free music programs offered twice a week, 5:30-6:30 Thursdays and 3:00-4:00 Saturdays, at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice, Louisiana. The center is one of six sites of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. To make the audio files available on Flickr, I am incorporating them in mp4 videos that display still photographs while the audio file plays.
Links to recordings are listed in chronological order beginning with the most recent recording. I don’t plan to upload recordings after every program, but I’ll try to include audio files that encompass a variety of songs and musical styles in Cajun and Creole music.
I made the first recording with a mini-recorder and then purchased a Zoom H1 Essential Handy Recorder mounted on an eight-inch tripod, which I am placing on the floor in front of me (as shown in the above photo). The sound quality still leaves a lot to be desired, but I hope the recordings might at least encourage everyone to come to the Rendezvous in the Prairie programs to experience the music first hand.
These acoustic performances take place on a front porch replica stage in the center’s Performance Hall. In between songs, the musicians often tell stories about their experiences playing Cajun and Creole music, and audience members are free to ask questions. Rendezvous in the Prairie offers a unique experience recaling the front porch gatherings of musicians with their families and friends that were a regular part of life in Acadiana in past years.
